Who is Nazli?

Queen Nazli of Egypt (1894–1978) was the wife of King Fuad I and the mother of King Farouk I. Born Nazli Sabri into an aristocratic Egyptian-Turkish family, she was educated in both Egypt and Europe, which shaped her cosmopolitan outlook. In 1919, she married Sultan Fuad, who later became King of Egypt, making her Queen Consort.

Nazli had a tumultuous marriage with King Fuad, known for his strict and controlling nature. As Queen, she was admired for her elegance and modern sensibility, but her influence in political affairs was limited by her husband. After Fuad’s death in 1936, her son Farouk became king, and Nazli was given the honorary title of Queen Mother.

However, tensions soon arose between Nazli and her son, especially over her personal choices. In the early 1940s, she relocated to the United States, where she lived in exile. There, she converted to Christianity, causing a scandal in Egypt and straining her relationship with Farouk, who disowned her and cut off her financial support.

Nazli spent the rest of her life in financial hardship in Los Angeles and passed away in 1978. Her story reflects both the opulence and personal tragedies that accompanied Egypt’s royal family.
