Who is Queen Farida?

Queen Farida of Egypt (1921–1988), born Safinaz Zulficar, was the first wife of King Farouk I and a beloved queen consort of Egypt. She came from an aristocratic family in Cairo and married Farouk in 1938 at the age of 16, shortly after he became king. Renamed "Farida" in accordance with royal tradition, she quickly won the hearts of Egyptians for her elegance, beauty, and compassionate nature.

As Queen, she supported charitable causes, advocated for social welfare, and represented the monarchy with dignity. She and Farouk had three daughters—Princesses Ferial, Fawzia, and Fadia—but Farouk’s desire for a male heir, coupled with political pressures and his increasingly erratic behavior, placed strain on their marriage. In 1948, after a decade together, the couple divorced, and Farida was stripped of her royal titles.

Following her divorce, Farida withdrew from public life and moved to Europe, where she pursued her passion for painting. Known for her resilience and quiet dignity, she continued her art career, with exhibitions showcasing her work in Egypt and Europe. Queen Farida passed away in Cairo in 1988, remembered fondly as a symbol of grace and strength amid Egypt’s turbulent royal history.
