Who is Princess Fawzia?

Princess Fawzia of Egypt (1921–2013) was a member of the Egyptian royal family and later became Queen of Iran. Born to King Fuad I and Queen Nazli, she was the sister of King Farouk I. Known for her striking beauty and elegance, Fawzia became an international icon.

In 1939, she married Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Crown Prince of Iran, and became Queen when he ascended the throne in 1941. Their marriage symbolized a political alliance between Egypt and Iran, but it was personally troubled. Fawzia struggled with cultural differences in Iran and felt isolated in the royal court. In 1948, she divorced Mohammad Reza, returning to Egypt and relinquishing her title as Queen of Iran.

Back in Egypt, Fawzia married Colonel Ismail Chirine, a prominent Egyptian diplomat, with whom she had two children. She withdrew from public life after the Egyptian monarchy was abolished in 1953 and lived a quiet, private life.

Princess Fawzia spent her later years between Egypt and Switzerland. She passed away in 2013 at the age of 91, remembered as a symbol of royal grace and beauty, as well as a historical figure bridging two influential royal dynasties in the Middle East.
