Who is Farouk?

King Farouk I of Egypt (1920–1965) was the penultimate monarch of Egypt, ruling from 1936 until his forced abdication in 1952. He ascended the throne at just 16 years old, following the death of his father, King Fuad I. Initially popular, Farouk was seen as a youthful symbol of hope and renewal. However, his reign was soon marked by political turmoil, lavish spending, and increasing discontent with British influence over Egypt.

Known for his extravagant lifestyle, Farouk amassed vast collections of luxury items and engaged in high-profile scandals, earning him the reputation of a playboy king. His rule coincided with significant political events, including World War II and growing nationalist movements within Egypt. His failure to address internal challenges, corruption within his government, and humiliating defeats—such as Egypt’s loss in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War—eroded his support.

In July 1952, the Free Officers Movement, led by Gamal Abdel Nasser, launched a coup that forced Farouk to abdicate in favor of his infant son, Ahmed Fouad II. He lived in exile in Italy until his death in 1965. Though remembered for his opulence and controversial reign, King Farouk’s downfall symbolized the end of Egypt’s monarchy and the rise of a new republican era.
